Diversion - Breakfast and tiffin items for kids

I am pretty disturbed lately with behavior of some people around me. And there is always a post-argument thoughts whether I was right or should I have just let it go?

So rather than sulking tonight over these thoughts, I feel that it is better to write something positive. I am not a great writer but I can pen down my thoughts, just like everybody else.

Now tonight's topic can be - breakfast n tiffin items for kids.

I am a working mom and do not have much time to make breakfast. I sleep late (reading books, or reading online books, or reading some article on phone etc.). There is also this new soap that I watch called 'Ratris Khel Chale' on Zee Marathi, but more about that later.

Ok.... working moms too want to give their kids healthy breakfast. In fact, they innovate to make it in lesser time. Arya does not crib to eat plain chapati bhaji for breakfast or lunch, but I still give him some variety. Here are a few items I make in the morning for breakfast cum tiffin.

1) Vermicelli upma or India Maggi - This is Arya's all time favorite dish, guaranteed to bring me an empty lunch box. We call this India Maggi 'cause Arya used to want Maggi from the packet but I thought, it is good to give something home made instead and healthier too. I began calling it India Maggi and he thought that it is no less than the real Maggi. I use roasted Vermicelli (get Bambino roasted vermicelli for saving your time).
a) For every cup of uncooked Vermicelli, almost 1 cup of water is needed (probably lesser).
b) Bring this water to a boil and add chopped carrots/french beans/capsicum in this. Go for whichever vegetable is available. Chop veggies overnight for a quicker job.
c) Heat a wok and add oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chilies, onion and fry this, after some time add tomatoes. Let all this lose water.
d) Now directly add the Vermicelli and some salt. Stir this for some time to coat the semolina with oil and spices.
e) Use a perforated ladle to pick veggies from the water and add in Vermicelli. Pour water little by little in the semolina to make sure it is not soggy. (Some people boil Vermicelli first ensuring it is not soggy and then do the rest of the stuff. This is also a good method. In fact you can cook semolina overnight and just give a tadka the next day, but we do not like this way of cooking it somehow.)
Done. This dish needs about 10 min of cooking time.

2) Thalipeeth
a) I have prepared a mixed flour of all whole grains (wheat, sorghum, channa dal, moong dal, whole rice, urad dal, little coriander seeds etc.) But you can buy thalipeeth bhajni in any kirana store in Maharashtra.
b) Before sleeping at night I knead the dough by adding some chopped onions, tomatoes, any green vegetable leaves (methi, palak etc) or coriander leaves, some salt, turmeric, chili powder. Add water and knead. Keep this overnight in fridge. Onion and tomatoes lose water so make sure that you knead using as little water as possible. It is ok if the dough seems to be breaking at places. It will look better in the morning. If you are making it immediately though, you can add more water and make the dough pliable.
c) The next day take a old plastic bag (milk packet bag, or dal packet bags) and make a square plastic out of it.
d) Take  a palm sized ball of the dough and pat on this plastic. Make this roti about .5 cm thick. Now lift the plastic and gently remove the thalipeeth on your other palm.
e) Place this on a hot tava adding a little oil. Cook on both sides. This takes some time to cook. But in the morning you only need to do the patting and roasting, so it is faster.
Serve with some tomato sauce.

Coming up someday... Green Moong dal dosa, Mixed vegetable parathas, Aloo parathas, thai vegetable rolls, fried rice, and more ;)

Onomatopoeia! And other fun incidences with Arya

1.       Hapin-bhapin bhipin-bhapan.

These are the words Arya uses to animate fights when he is playing the role of Bheem. If there is a takkar of 2 cars he says Bhapaan.
These words are so funny. I wonder how he came up with these.

·         The other day he was describing to me some boulder that fell down in a garden (I have no idea where this was - school, my building or TV). He said, "Mummy, Galdan madhe to dagad dhass padla". (The boulder fell in the garden with a dhass noise.)

·         Then again there are dichaun, dadham, etc., used wherever applicable.

2.       Location ala

Yesterday he was asking, "location ala?".
I didn't understand what he meant, so I asked, "What location? Is it related to Dad?"
"Nahi tula location aahe." (No ,you have location)
"Okay, good". Didn't understand a single word

3.       An incident in one evening showed his sensitivity. I was sitting on the couch, staring into the void. Arya notices whenever I sit in 'thinkers' pose.

Arya: Mummy tu aj ashi sad ka disti aahes? (Mom why are you looking so sad today?)
Me: I'm not sad sonu, I am just thinking.
Arya to Yogesh: Pappa, hi aj sad aahe. Hila TV lavun dya ani doctor cha lava TV madhe. (Dad, mom is looking sad, so please put Dr. House serial)
Arya to me: Mummy, tula Guddu Babbanchi athvan yete ka? (Do you miss your parents? He calls his maternal grandparents Guddu-Baba.)
Arya continued: Guddu-Baba Vashi madhe aahet. Mag tey Pimpdi la janar, nantar they aplyakade yenar, ok? (He said that my parents were in Vashi at my sisters place, then they would go back to their house in Pimpri and later visit us.)

Sometimes he says to Yogesh: Pappa, hila bhuk lagli asel. Hila jevan dya na.

Or to me: Mummy tu majhi friend banli aahes. (Mom you've become my friend)

4.       Indian Maggi

On Monday morning I was by the kitchen table making vermicelli. He loves it and calls it Indian Maggi. This way I don't have to deny Maggi to him. Whenever he wants Maggi, I give him vermicelli. He doesn’t know my trick so far.

Arya: Mummy, aj tu majha sathi kay banavti aahes khayla? (What are you making for me?)
I showed him the packet.
Arya smiling and hugging me: Mummy, tu changli aahes. Tu majhi friend banli aahes. (You are so nice. You have become my friend.)

5.       Bath Tub

I was bathing him yesterday. He used to hate bathing in a tub before. I had bought a round tub for him when he was little. Now he barely fits into it. When we were at Mani's house last weekend, he saw Shaurya bathing in it and tried it. Since then he wants me to use the older bathtub at my home to bathe him.

Arya: Mummy, mala pink round bathtub madhe anghol karaychi aahe. Pan Shaurya jhopun anghol karto na? (I want to have a bath in our pink and round tub. Shaurya lies down while having a bath)
Me: Nahi sonu, tyacha tondat pani jail na. So he doesn't lie down in the tub. (No he doesn't, or there'll be water in his mouth.)
Arya: Ok. Tu mala motha tub an. Pink colour cha. (Ok. Pls get a bigger tub for me. Pink in color.)
Me: Ok. I’ll get it on Saturday.
(But I know he is very particular and remembers things well.)
So I say: Pink color nasla tar konta color anu? Yellow anu ka? Or Purple? (Can I get a Yellow or a Purple one if not Pink?)
Arya thinks: Chalel.
But just after a few minutes he says: Nahi mummyyyyyy, Pink color ach an. (No, I want Pink)
Me: Ohhh, thik aahe.

Jai bappa! ek don teen char!

Got a few minutes of free time and have so much to write about Arya!

So these days kiddo is getting smarter by the day. He has learnt a lot many many things. Sometimes I feel I should record each moment but the kid never poses or repeats something in front of the camera – ofcourse he wants the camera in his own hands!

Thanks to his babysitter Mangal, he has learnt counting in Marathi! So he goes ek, don, teen, char for each and every thing…give him few toys, few stickers on the cardboard, few steps to walk he constantly chats don, teen char, teen don, teen don and so on, not necessarily in the right order.

He has picked up the phone attitude from adults like making faces, laughing, waving hands aimlessly, even the fake coughing, and saying accha bye, ok bye, thik aahe bye like me!

He sits and does pretend reading of books. The other day he lied down with is head on my pillow while I was cooking. He started reading the novel I’m reading now and in my style. Lying down sideways and holding the book horizontally and disregarding everyone who wanted to talk to him! Fast learner he is.

Arya is a very God and elder respecting person you might think. Yea, he suddenly remembers that he wants to touch your feet and starts a paya-padne or feet touching for ashirwaad spree. He makes me and Yogesh get our feet on the floor if we are sitting with our legs folded, after that he makes sure he touches each foot! He never passes a single zhendu/marigold flower garland without doing namaskar saying jai bappa. All god statues and idols in real life or TV need to be revered by doing namaskar. Even my asafoetida bottle that has a Laxmi goddess photo gets its due namaskar!

Ok, leaving for the day. More about Arya as soon as I get time!

Lyrics of Marathi Songs

Tired of searching lyrics of a lot of Marathi songs online... and the forums are so lame with no one to reply to interested people who want to know the meanings and words.

So now I am going to start off with the activity of uploading lyrics of songs I like (and yes, the ones I have understood).
There may be some errors and I would appreciate corrections too! :)
